Note: The Dedman School of Law does not require its students to own a notebook computer equipped with a wireless network transceiver. The Law Library’s circulation desk has several wireless network-ready notebook computers available for use inside the Law Library. If you do not want to purchase a wireless network transceiver for your own notebook computer, the Underwood Law Library circulation desk has a limited number of wireless network transceivers available for eight-hour loan.

Question: In what areas of the Law School is the wireless network accessible?

The wireless network is accessible in nearly all student-utilized areas of the Law School, including classrooms and the Law Library. A list of other SMU locations with wireless network access is at http://www.smu.edu/help/shared/wireless.asp.

Question: What kind of wireless network is this?

The law school has an 802.11g wireless network that is also fully compatible with the 802.11b wireless standard.

Question: Does my notebook computer require special software and/or configuration to access the wireless network?

For most wireless network transceivers, you must install on your notebook computer the software driver provided by the manufacturer of your transceiver. The driver required for the library-owned wireless transceivers is available at the circulation desk.

Printing to the Underwood Law Library computer lab’s printers via the wireless network requires that special software be installed on your notebook computer. Instructions for downloading the software over the wireless network are available at the Law Library’s circulation desk and in the computer lab.

Question: Are special passwords required to connect to the wireless network?

No.  Students use the same username and password required to access other SMU computer systems.

Question: What resources are accessible using the wireless network?

Students can access everything via the wireless network that they can access with a hard-wired SMU network connection: the Internet, Lexis, Westlaw, campus resources such as student records, email, printers, etc.
